Established in early 2019, the members of Convertible Play House are Jaspr Byrnes, Doug Hammett, and Casey Marie Smith. They improvise multilayered polyrhythmic soundscapes with analogue synthesizers, looping stations, contact mics and acoustic instruments.
Jaspr Byrnes is a multi-instrumentalist with a background in piano, guitar, and vocals. Her early experience in orchestra and garage bands eventually led to an exploration of modular synthesizers in the 1980s. She studied electronic music composition at Northern Illinois University, later producing an EP in 2008 and planning a new album for 2024.
Doug Hammett is a versatile artist in music, fine arts, and theater, beginning as a percussionist in orchestras and marching bands, later delving into fusion jazz and synthesizers. He explores rhythm's role from indigenous trance practices to contemporary electronic music, currently incorporating analog equipment, acoustic instruments, and polyrhythmic looping.
Casey Marie Smith, influenced by nature's sounds and Venice Beach street performers, is a self-taught musician engaging in garage bands, studio recordings, and live performances. She merges her passion for sound's impact with her work as an acupuncturist and craniosacral therapist, using voice and instruments to explore personal and collaborative journeys.
