During my creative process of developing my own tarot deck these little bearded guys appeared. As I played with the narrative I let the characters direct themselves. Playful stories took shape, sometimes feeding a larger story, other times they became complete unrelated events. If you want to see how some of these came together, check out my tarot deck called “Journey of the Bearded Tarot”
These pieces came about when exploring ways to push the “Journey of the Bearded Tarot” deck images further. The original pieces were painted on 12” x 11” panels that then became a tarot deck of 78 cards. The color images were converted into black and white graphics which expanded the ways these images could be shared. These laser cut pieces are one of the ways the graphics can be used.
The city of West Hollywood has debuted a new exhibition of artworks by Doug Hammett at the West Hollywood Library called “Journey of the Bearded Tarot.” Images in the exhibit are the artist’s interpretation of the traditional tarot deck. They serve as momentary guides, giving the participant a new perspective on the past, present and future, revealing hidden gems that might normally remain hidden from view.
