Art 105 is a fluid space, allowing one to step back and see the bigger picture of one’s creative direction. Its function adjusts to whatever creative project lands within its walls. It has been a fine art gallery, a place for workshops, music studio, creative office, artist’s studio, theater, etc.
When in art gallery mode, visual artworks begin to populate the space. The gallery has presented group shows where artists are encouraged to interpret a chosen theme in their style and medium. Themes such as "Lost & Found," "Inside Out," and "Totem" set the tone for exploring materials, concepts, and spatial relationships.
Mystery begins to fill the space as costumed characters and props move on the stage. Theater lights and projections on dynamic surfaces serve as portals to other realms. How far one goes down the rabbit hole is up to each participant. It's fun to play with this basic impulse to tell each other stories and engage in a communal event, even if we don't know the meaning or outcome.
What happens when the creative impulses are directed towards pure sound? We never know what new combination of instruments may grace the space, acoustic and electronic. How the soundwaves collide and form new relationships is in constant flux. With these new sonic connections, we shape the world around us.
When in workshop mode, it's time to dive deep into various creative practices, usually intending to strengthen one's relationship with intuition and spirit. It could be an exploration of painting techniques, the fundamentals of abstract theater, or riding the soundwaves of drum-journeying. Each workshop gives opportunity to let go of what we think we know, allowing space for the unexpected and profound.
